A journey to remember...day 7

Oct 6, 2006

Mussorie is about 30 KMs from the capital Dehradun. The road takes us uphill and the highest point is about 6000 feet above the sea level. Mussorie is called the "Queen of the Hills" and its beauty is worthy of the name it’s christened with. On the way we saw numerous residential schools and management institutes with its smartly dressed receptors of knowledge: the students. The cool climate, green and pollution free environment makes it an ideal place for setting up institutes to pursue academic and research interests.

Our first stopover at Mussorie was at a waterfall called Bhatta falls where I was pleasantly surprised to find scarce human presence and enjoyed the quiet solitude with nature. It is not a very high or spectacular waterfall. May be about 50 to 60 feet high from where the water was falling with a great gusto! Our hotel was at the top of the hill. Taxis and tourist vehicles are not allowed after a certain point on the road in order to make it pedestrian friendly and to encourage people to get around by foot taking in the sights and sounds of beautiful Mussorie. There are hand drawn carriages available at your service to carry the baggage and for elderly people who cannot walk. One astonishing sight to observe was that the whole place was mist covered even though it was mid afternoon. We visited another famous waterfall called Kempti falls and a beautiful flower garden built during the colonial times. The British made frequent escapes to such cool hill-stations to seek refuge from the scorching Indian summer heat.
